Harsh Realities of Online News
I am a news junkie who will read anything and everything and I catch a lot of from a huge variety of spices ranging from the mainstream to the utterly obscure. I am naturally curious, unafraid of any topics, and not easily manipulated into emotional reactions based on content. My opinions do not come from journalism or opinions of others- because besides compulsive reading I get a kick out of doing my own research on what I read.
My commentary coming tonight stems from an emotional reaction - not a logical one.
I subscribe to a newsfeed that has worldwide stories around the clock with no real agenda except pushing content. It’s not too liberal and not too conservative. Not too gender specific, not divided by race or class or views. And not too many opinionated asses spouting nonsense. I only subscribe because I like the feed coming from the UK because as an Anglophile I just love me the Brits.
Everything makes this site. No matter how minuscule a story or how far removed from mainstream media. Stories come everywhere on the globe. There are stories published that would never make any other news outlet. It is just a hodgepodge of everything. Up until today it was a dose of harsh reality that kept me grounded and grateful for everyone and everything in my life.
That is the only defense I will offer them. Because the benefit of an app that delivers the world to my phone is no longer good enough. The stories are the most horrid examples of so called humanity - all depicting the human race as despicable, cruel and inhumane. Nothing is censored. Nothing is written with respect to the morals and values of the readers. It’s all a black and white snapshot of the ugliness of our world and the reality of people who reside in it that should be locked away forever.
I usually scroll past the truly horrific. But there are headlines with previews that scream of murder, rape, abuse, racism, and the horrid treatment of children, elderly, disabled, and pets. It happens everywhere. There are stories of cannabilism in third world countries - but even worse is the detail of the dark web where everyday folks can indulge their fetish fantasies of consuming human flesh. Then there is the rape, sexual torture, and abuse of women, men, children and animals. Daily content streams the stories of women treated like slaves, whores or of property with little to no value- not only is far away places but down your street and in your neighborhood. There is celebrity gossip that rivals the rags that populate the internet. But the stories are worse because the reporters are stalkers. Politics have no bias when there are just as many anti Trump exclusives as there are anti Obama’s. The stories in this case are not the focus- it’s the comments from every crazy or demented bully you can imagine that has a user account. And the rating system is like a bloody battle of likes and dislikes from other crazy and demented bullies.
Why do I subscribe? My need to understand the harsh realities of life so I can ground myself in my reality with a grateful nod of thanks for everything I have. I never want to be shielded from the truth. I never want to be coddled with safe stories. And I never want to receive stories tainted by bias. I want facts, figures and stories without redactions. Don’t get me wrong- I do not derive my opinions from this content. My opinions are all carefully calculated with reputable sources.
Today I am considering uninstalling the app. What do you think?
